Stimming is short for self-stimulation. Stimming is a repetitive body movement, such as hand flapping. Stimming is commonly found in Autism and Sensory Processing Disorder, but also found in other developmental disabilities. This behavior may involve any or all of the senses in various degrees in different individuals.

When our child is different, there’s so much more we need to learn about parenting. Our first go-to will be to learn all we can about the diagnosis. We learn everything we can, so we can understand and provide the necessary support, intervention or therapy that they need to thrive. Whether it’s by reading books, attending courses or through community groups, we learn what we can, when we can.

It’s been a few months since we posted anything on Spectrum of Voices by Project Haans. However, that does not mean we have not been our advocacy stopped. While silence is golden, it is not an indication of remaining idle. We were still keeping the fire going towards our goals here at Project Haans.

Running IT related courses for children and teens with Autism has always been a part of our long term plan. This is in line with our goal, that is, to make our children employable and independent adults. However, we did not expect to make this move so as early on or as suddenly as it happened.



“I want my child to speak.”
All parents want that. As a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT), I want to help parents achieve this goal as well. However, is this a choice for us to make? It is estimated that about 25-30% of children diagnosed with autism are non-verbal or minimally verbal (NVMV)

The full title of this book definitely does it justice - Autism Abracadabra. Seven Magic Ingredients to Help Develop Your Child’s Interactive Attention Span. Hence, the term grimoire used in the title of this piece. According to the Oxford Dictionary, a grimoire is “a book of magic spells and invocations.”

Interoception is a sense that allows us to feel sensations from the inside of our bodies. For example, interoception enables you to feel your stomach: is it growling or is it fluttery? Is it full or maybe nauseous?
